Members of the AEON Retail Workers Union Japan and Japan Asian Friendship Society (JAFS) visited SD GMIM 4 Tomohon, one of the largest elementary schools in Tomohon City, North Sulawesi, Indonesia.
Their visit was part of a meaningful effort to support environmental education and promote green awareness among children.
The event brought together representatives from Japanese NGOs (JAFS), the headmaster, teachers, and students.
School Principal Fientje Mawikere, S.Pd.., warmly welcomed the guests, emphasizing the school's role within the GMIM Maranatha Paslaten congregation and its significance in the local education system, with over 600 students enrolled.
This heartwarming encounter took place on 26th June 2014, coinciding with the school's exam results day. Although most students were already on holiday, the school remained vibrant with the excitement of the occasion.
After the school welcome, the group proceeded to the slopes of Mount Mahawu for a tree planting activity as a symbolic act of environmental responsibility.
Why Is This Important?
The visit highlighted how international NGOs and labor unions can play a vital role in empowering local communities, particularly in integrating environmental values into education.
By engaging directly with students, the AEON and JAFS teams demonstrated that cross-cultural cooperation is not only possible but also powerful in shaping young minds to care for their environment.
This kind of collaboration is essential in regions where access to sustainable education resources is limited. The presence of global partners adds value, inspiration, and a broader perspective to local efforts.
How Can Others Help?
This initiative serves as a call to action for other NGOs, donors, and educational stakeholders, both in Japan and globally. Supporting environmental education for children doesn't just build greener communities—it cultivates a new generation of **environmentally conscious leaders.
Organizations can contribute by:
* Sponsoring school-based green programs,
* Donating educational materials or planting tools,
* Facilitating exchange or volunteer opportunities,
* Providing training for teachers on sustainability topics.
Closing Message
The future of our planet lies in the hands of the young. Through small acts like planting a tree, students at SD GMIM 4 Tomohon are learning to make a big impact. But they cannot do it alone.
Global collaboration is the key.
With continued support from stakeholders like AEON and JAFS, we can foster a stronger, greener, and more compassionate world, starting with our schools.
